This has got to be one of my favorite food storage tricks.  So easy and SO CHEAP!  Making homemade sweetened condensed milk is as easy as a blender, powdered milk, sugar, water, and a little butter.  That’s it!  Now, I’ve been teaching classes long enough to know that people freak out when they see how much sugar is in this recipe for sweetened condensed milk.  After all, sweetened means just a little sugar added in–right?  WRONG!  This is the ugly truth of sweetened condensed milk, it is full of sugar.  See sweetened condensed milk first started as a way of getting milk to the soldiers of the CIVIL WAR.  As we all know, sugar is a great preservative.  However, when other forms of shelf-stable milk came to be (like evaporated milk and powdered milk) sweetened condensed milk was on it’s way out until they re-marketed themselves as a great ingredient for ooey-gooey, decadent desserts.  And here we are.  Talking about how to make sweetened condensed milk at home.  Now, if you use LDS Cannery Milk to make it, it will cost under $1.00 to make–which is usually cheaper than what you can buy it from at the store.  Plus, did I mention that since we’ll be using powdered milk that is non-fat, this is actually more like the low-fat version they sell?  Yep, definitely something to add to your arsenal of things to make at home.  Here’s a quick little video to show you just how easy it is to eat sweetened condensed milk.

  1. I really love the idea of making my own condensed milk, but I don’t have many recipes to use it. Do you have a good source of these recipes?

    1. Yes, any recipe from the Eagle Brand site for their sweetened condensed milk will work. They have lots and lots!

  2. Use for Blender Cheesecake!
