Look what I found while shopping at Costco the other day?! I couldn’t believe it when I saw it!

WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT ABOUT SHELF STABLE WHOLE MILK?

Did you know that one of my most commonly asked questions is what families with young children still drinking whole milk should store in their food storage since powdered milk is non-fat? This provides a great back up for those of us with toddlers and for who a high fat milk is important. (Did you know that the fat in milk is essential in brain development in young children?) Not to mention a nice back up for a snow storm or to prevent a late night trip to the store!

HOW WOULD I STORE SHELF STABLE MILK?

Hershey’s says…

HERSHEY’S Shelf Stable Milk can withstand temperature variations wonderfully.

Putting the product on the shelf then in the refrigerator back and forth causes no harm to the product as long as it remains unopened.

The best temperature to store the milk is from 33° F to 80° F.

It can withstand higher temperatures but this will cause the milk to age quicker (leading to off flavor and a slight brown tinge).

The temperature the milk can be stored at is related to time. Storing the milk at 81° F to 108° F over the shelf life will simply cause the milk to age sooner but will not cause injury or illness. Storing the milk at 109° F for more than 10 days may cause the milk to sour or carton to swell but will not cause injury or illness. Storing the milk at 131° F for 5 days or more may cause the milk to sour or the carton to swell but will not cause injury or illness.

The milk should not be frozen as this will cause the appearance of the milk to be off.

We recommend serving the milk chilled.

After opening refrigerate the product and use within 14 days.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF SHELF STABLE MILK-IN FOOD STORAGE TERMS?

It’s definitely not the same shelf life of powdered milk which is technically 30+ years. Shelf stable milk does have a use by date on the packaging which is usually with in a year or so.

WHERE CAN I PURCHASE SHELF STABLE MILK?

Well, apparently you can purchase it at some Costcos. You can check availability of Hershey’s shelf stable milk by state by clicking HERE or you can even purchase Borden shelf stable milk through places like AMAZON by clicking HERE.

IS IT CHEAPER TO USE SHELF STABLE MILK V. FRESH MILK?

No, it isn’t. But it is a great option if you have family members in need of whole milk that you would like to be prepared for.

WHAT ELSE CAN I STORE IF I DON’T WANT TO STORE SHELF STABLE WHOLE MILK

If you have a family member that benefits from whole milk but you don’t want to store shelf stable whole milk you can store extra amounts of peanut butter (which contains healthy fat for brain development) or canned evaporated milk. Both of those options do not have the shelf life of regular powdered milk but serve as good alternatives.

  2. I store powdered Nestle Nido or Nestle Kilm which is powdered whole milk. You can find it at Sam’s club and at international groceries…
It seems to cost between $16 and $18 per #10 can here in Maryland.

  3. We’ve recently got into using almond milk. It can be stored outside of the fridge if unopened and typically has an expiration date of about a year. The best part is I can’t tell much difference between it and regular milk.

  5. I also go to the Gossner factory in Logan, UT. I buy shelf stable whipping cream, and quart whole milks to put in food storage. I am always ready to make homemade ice cream or have fresh cream to top a pie.  I also buy the indv serving 2% and chocolate milks there for my kids to take in their lunches. I put them in the freezer the night before, then it defrosts in their lunch bags. They love the rootbeer flavor & cookies & cream flavor. Said it taste like a milk shake at school, and costs less then buying the school milk.

  6. Hi – wanted to comment.
I live in Denmark and are almost unable to find non-fat milkpowder, i found a bag of 200 grams the cost was 4 dollars!!!!! I might have to travel to USA, to get my shelf-stable stuff.
But i do find whole-milk powder called NIDO from Nestle, but shelf-life is limited, i find it in arabic foodshops.
On Amazon europe i found almond-milk powder, which is wonderfull.
    Thanks for your ideas.

  7. My parents live near Gossner’s plant and my kids LOVE to stop and buy a flavored milk and cheese sample.  It is wonderful to have the shelf stable milk in my pantry.  I store the whipping cream and 1 % most of the time.  It has saved me so many unplanned trips to the store!  I use my dry milk for most baking and cooking applications, but we don’t care to drink it.  Gossner’s milk to the rescue.  (Hershey’s is one of the brands that Gossner’s packages milk for.  It is less money to buy the Gossner’s brand at the outlet store than to buy the Hershey’s brand at Costco.)

  8. I get Gossner’s milk at the DOLLAR STORE!!!  It has a long shelf life and I stock up every time I need something from the dollar store.  It is the Gossner’s brand and comes in whole, 2%, and chocolate.  I found these in Utah at Dollar Tree.  They carry the milk all the time, but I have noticed that they are out more often than they used to be.  Maybe I shouldn’t tell my secret 😉

  9. Horizon Organics also makes a vanilla, chocolate and plain shelf stable milk in 8ox cartons – and it is really tasty!  We grew up with Parmalat which comes in quarts and small cartons – because we aren’t whole milk drinkers the powdered milk is fine for us – along with the Horizon Organics Chocolate for the kids.  I drink Almond and Rice Dream in a pinch or on cereal.  In an emergency – Like Huricane Irene – it all works out fine –

  10. In Europe this was the only way I could buy milk. They only sell UHT milk.

You can buy a different brand of UHT (Ultra-High-temperature)  milk at Walmart.

It tastes different than pasteurized milk. i never got used to it, even after a year and a half. Still, it’s a great thing to have on hand; we have some as well.
