Okay, sorry for the lack of posting. If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with your kids, I’ve got one…and it includes a great excuse to make hot dogs!

My kids were able to do Oma and Grandpa camp this summer with some of their cousins and to get the kids in the Solar Cooking spirit we made a mini solar cooker out of a pizza box for them to make s’mores in while I made hot dogs in the Sun Oven (which were fabulous!)

As you can see it’s as easy as can be! Simple wrap aluminum foil, shiny side up, on the inside and inside top of the pizza box. Place the the chocolate on one graham cracker and a marshmallow on the other on dishes (preferably black) and place in the oven. Cover with plastic wrap to keep from outside things landing on it and prop the door open. Let sit for 15-30 minutes.

The kids loved it! The marshmallows actually got warm and gooey and the chocolate was perfectly melted!

If you were wondering…the hot dogs in the Sun Oven are awesome! They aren’t boiled and they aren’t grilled they taste like what you would get at a ball game. It takes about 30 minutes for them to bake.

Also, if you’re wondering, I did try making s’mores and hot dogs at the same time in my Sun Oven and the chocolate didn’t melt it just burned. Total bummer!

  1. Crystal, you are a genius! I’m gonna try the pizza box smores. We sure do have enough sun here in VA this summer!! (….pant, pant…..) I’m going to look into the sun oven too. Keep up the GREAT work!!

  2. I tried searching the web for more ideas of what can be made in the pizza box oven, but I couldn’t seem to find anything other than s’mores. Do you have more ideas or a source?
