Is anyone feeling the pinch at the grocery store?  You may remember in my Grocery 101 class talking how in order for some companies to adjust to the increased prices of gas and food are decreasing their product sizes.  You’ve probably all noticed that most ice cream containers are no longer a half gallon. I recently came across this article from the NY Times about this exact thing and EVERYONE needs to read it.  It goes in depth why companies are doing this, how to combat how they will re-market these items to you, and it’s effect on the future of that product.

This also serves as a GREAT reason to have food storage on hand.  I’ve always know that if you have food storage, you’ll be living off last year’s prices.  Now, I realize not only are living off last year’s prices but you’re living off last year’s SIZES.  That double whammy together means way more bang for your buck-all just for storing a little extra food.

Do you have tips for how you’re combatting the food prices changing?  Please share over on my discussion page on FACEBOOK!

  1. I have also noticed that there isn’t the selection there was last year. Things that used to come in myriad flavors, suddenly come in two or three. It’s weird. And it made me think I was losing my mind there for a while. I went summer clothes shopping a couple days ago, and noticed the same is true of more than just food products. Maybe it’s just the area where I live, but it is kind of freaking me out.

  2. I bought ice cream this week and some containers are now 1.5 quarts, down from 1.75 quarts, which was down from 2 quarts.  Russell’s brand was still 2 quarts so I bought their brand to show my appreciation.  It’s important to check prices and size.  I’d rather have the sizes remain the same and prices go up, it seems more honest that way.  We’re paying more for the product either way.
