Practice using cracked wheat as nuts I tried this Strawberry “Nut” Jell-O salad. This is my ULTIMATE FAVORITE Jell-O salad in the WHOLE WORLD. It is one of my most favorite recipes growing up.  My mom was known as the “wheat lady” while I was growing up and this was a staple recipe she would make when she taught her wheat classes.  I would plead and beg to have some of this and I would pray there would be a lot leftover after her classes.  It’s a great example of how to use cracked wheat to help you rotate your food storage in really awesome ways.  To view a food storage video of how to crack small amounts of wheat in your blender, click HERE.

  5. This is probably a dumb question, but do you dry out the cracked wheat before you use it as a topping so it’s crunchy?

  7. Mrs. J.,
Not a dumb question, I should have clarified…so thanks for asking! Definitely DO NOT dry out the cracked wheat. It will be like eating rocks.

  9. I have never heard of using a coffee grinder to crack wheat. Does it have to be a special model? Can you use to grind wheat to make flour? Sorry for so many questions. I have just stumbled on your sight and I am really enjoying. We are working hard to get our food storage, but I made a goal to learn how to use it so that it wouldn’t go to waste.

  11. Denise,

Any coffee grinder will crack your wheat very nicely. They do not grind your wheat. You will need to get a wheat grinder to make flour out of. Try the blender wheat pancakes until you can get a grinder. They’re delicious!

  15. Have you ever made cracked wheat cereal with this? Is there anything different you would do to make cereal. My husband thinks I need to soak the wheat overnight before you cook it. Is that necessary?

  16. Author

no you don’t need to soak it. You can actually just do it in the microwave or the stove or put it in the crockpot over night.

  17. I made this for church Enrichment night and the sisters loved every bite. They couldn’t believe it had wheat in it. I have just been called to be Home Storage Specialist for my ward and I really want to help the sister learn to use all the canned wheat they have stored. This was an excellent recipe to start with. I did a cracked wheat demo similar to your video. Thanks so much.

  18. What kind of wheat is best to crack? Does it matter if it is hard red or soft white or whatever?

  19. I use hard white because that is what I store.
