Take a look in my cupboards…

One of my most frequently asked questions is how do I function in a small kitchen and trust me, sometimes I ask myself the same question! However, thanks to a very organized minded husband we have developed some really great tools that work well in my kitchen and hopefully there are some good tips for you to use in your own kitchen. Because trust me, I know it’s AWFUL to work in a kitchen with no space, no room in the cupboards, and where everything is hard to find! So, check out my video below and take a peek into my cupboards….I’m being so brave to do this 🙂

If you have great ideas for small spaces or need more ideas, make sure you visit Food Storage Made Easy. They are compiling a list of great ideas and will be sharing them all next Monday! And make sure you check back Wednesday for a look into “food storage room.”

I love your refrigerator! The bins in the frig would be an asset. My kitchen is like yours-small and although I can clean just about any mess up in 20 minutes, a bigger kitchen would be a dream come true at times. I have been at my computer for the last hour going through your website. Thank you, thank you. I am inspired and love all that you do.

You’ve certainly got more guts than I do. I could never give a tour like that. Of course, your kitchen is also spotless. While I have a small kitchen, and I use my pantry for most food, like you do – I seem to have a lot more cooking equipment. Where do you keep pots and pans?

We have the same cupboard doors!! different hardware and layout but doors the same. I like the lazy susan idea and the bin idea – we have 2 cupboards that are long and in corners, I’m always losing stuff in the back – not such a big deal for the bottom one since thats where I store the cake carrier and turkey roasting pan – but the top one is tough – I found 4 bottles of vanilla back there before the holidays….bins will solve that! Thanks for the reminder

My “aha” moment was when you said you keep all the leftovers on the top shelf in your fridge. It was like a light bulb going off! What a great idea to help keep the fridge more organized and clean, and know where everything is. Never thought about bins before, but that’s also another idea I’ll use. Thanks for your great ideas – keep them coming!

Thank you for the tour. I got lots of great tips & ideas. We will be moving and our kitchen will be greatly downsized. I currently have 30 large cabinet doors and will be going down to at least half the size of that so your tips are exactly what I needed right now. Thank you!! =]

I Love the bins. I have some bins for certain items but never thought about putting like items in my cupboards together in bins. My kitchen is even smaller than yours…and old…with no dishwasher…and I hate to do dishes…Someday! I have started to mix my milk with half powdered milk and no one is the wiser. In fact, I have heard my 2 oldest boys talking about it and my 5 year old brought the jug to my 8 year old and said, “Here Dixon, Try this milk. It’s delicious!” He thinks it tastes like a milk shake. Thank You, Shaylyn

I having been thinking about doing something similar to your bins lately. Now I’m totally sold!

Another tip that you might want to consider is square containers for both the fridge and cupboards. I found that I was losing a ton of space using round containers in those square spaces! Tupperware has their square storage containers at 40% off right now!

    Thanks for all you do!

Thanks so much for the tips! I really needed this extra push to get things organized. I was tempted to keep some cans in my cupboard, rather than putting them ALL on the Shelf Reliance shelf… but I decided… if Crystal can do it… I can do it. I LOVE the shelf!

Ok, so I beg to differ…I think I have the worlds smallest kitchen, haha! I do many of the same things you do as far as organizing to maximize the small amount of space, but one idea that I am head over heels for and just sent my hubby to Walmart for is how you store your baggies and rags. I have 3 drawers in my entire kitchen. One has our silverware and measuring cups, one has our cooking utensils, and one is the catch all for storage bags and rags and I hate digging through the drawer for a bread bag or dish towel. So thank you! I am so glad my friend introduced me recently to your website! Loving it!

LOVE the racks under your sink.
For me , the bins don’t work… it seems like it wastes more space then I save in time. However, my kitchen is even smaller then yours, and our food storage area is also not very acessible or great. I have a few bins, but not as many as you.
However, I’m a nurse. I don’t know if I could make it looking at those pink bins at home too. 🙂

So is it okay to store metal cans with food in them in the fridge? I love all your ideas. I put bins in my fridge, and I got the set of racks from walmart. I love it. I was able to free up 2 drawers and tons of space due to moving lots of food items.. I moved all the things that I had on my counter to my pantry. I love love love it…
    Thanks again,

I use office supply vertical file organizers to hold my cookie sheets upright. You have to make sure to get some with 2″ spaces if you have cake pans, but they can be reasonable in price and make it SO easy to just pull out one cookie sheet without disturbing any other pans.

    Great site!

I’m with Debi , my ‘Ah-Ha!’ moment was when I saw the pre-measured bread mixes in the fridge. I make bread often but not as much as I would prefer, prepping several batches ahead of time solves that challenge lickety split! Thank you for the tip!

Also, I bundle my dry goods in the exact same white Sterilite containers. I use them everywhere, especially in the bathroom closet. Nice to see someone else using them!

Firstly I am so greatful that you are doing this. I have recently started getting and using foodstorage. I also just received my first shipment from the LDS cannery. (I live in ND so our orders have to be shipped to minneapolis and picked up and hauled back) I have been trying to find a way to use my #10 cans more efficiently and noticed you have lids for yours… where on earth can i get some?! haha… thank you again for helping a young mother and wife with the seemingly insurmountable task.
