FACT: Disaster history suggests that modern Americans are particularly, mysteriously bad at protecting themselves from guaranteed threats.
Catastrophic events such as natural and manmade disasters can happen at any moment and most happen with NO warning. Unfortunately, 85% of the people in the United States aren’t prepared to care for themselves after a disaster because they believe FEMA will be there to take care of them. (Laughable, right?) History has shown us that this just isn’t the case. In fact, 91% of Americans live in places at a moderate-to-high risk of natural and manmade disasters.
So why don’t we prepare better?
Americans have a tendency to be die-hard optimists, literally. It is part of what makes the country great–and vincible.
However, a federal system like ours is not built to plan for–or respond to–massive disasters. In fact, Mike Leavitt, FORMER Secretary of Health and Human Services said, “Any state, any community or for that matter, any citizen that fails to prepare, assuming the federal government can take care of them will be tragically wrong.”
The real fact is that YOU will be your family’s first line of defense.
