So on the same theme of hating peeling and slicing…let me now talk about dehydrated apple slices.  Not only are the great as a snack or in lunch boxes, but they make apple pies, apple betty, or any baked good requiring apples.  Actually, did you know that dehydrated apple slices are the cheapest way to supply your food storage with fruit?  The best place to purchase them are from the LDS Cannery online (these can be purchased online and shipped straight to your door)!  I know what you’re thinking, what about freeze-dried apples?  What about them?  To me, they taste like styrofoam (dehydrated fruits and vegetables always have more flavor), turn to powder, and cost a ton more.  Why bother?

Here is my favorite recipe to make with the dehydrated apple slices–it’s so easy that my 7-year-old loves to make it when we are assigned to bring a dessert to a family function.

APPLE BETTY WITH FOOD STORAGE

Filling:

2 C. boiling water
4 C. dried apple slices

Topping:
1/2 C. whole wheat flour
1/4 C. oatmeal
1/4 t. cinnamon
1/4 C. brown sugar
1/4 C. butter

Pour boiling water over dried apples. Let stand at least 5 minutes. Meanwhile, mix dry topping ingredients together, then cut in butter. Place apples and any remaining liquid in a greased 9-inch square baking pan. Sprinkle topping over apples. Bake at 350 for 55 minutes.

  1. DH apple slices are great for snacking on, but my favorite way of eating them is in apple crisp with vanilla ice cream, yum!
