A lot of people think tortillas aren’t worth the effort…but wait until you try this recipe! It’s easy and tastes delicious…so much better than those store bought ones. Of course they are, everything is so much better freshly made. I don’t know why but it amazes me every time! Of course I have some tutorial videos for you to watch as well so you can SEE just how easy it is! Now this recipe won’t make corn tortillas this is a FLOUR tortilla recipe.
Flour Tortillas
2 c. flour
½ t. salt
1 heaping ¼ t. baking powder
¼ c. oil
2/3 c. hot water
Mix all ingredients in food processor. Mix until it forms a ball of dough. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rest for 15 minutes. Uncover and form until balls of dough just larger than a golf ball. Cover with damp cloth and allow to rest for 15 minutes – 1 hour. Flatten and roll out. Cook on hot skillet flipping when bubbles form.
Can the dough be prepared in anything besides a food processor? I don’t have one, but I have a Kitchen Aid. Would something like that work as well?

I am excited to try this recipe. In the past when I’ve made tortillas they are too thick and hard. And not edible, lol. I will try again with your tips and recipe. Thanks.

I love making homemade tortillas. I use a different recipe but it also calls for oil. I have always mixed it by hand and it has been fine. If you are going to use shortening, a food processor would be a much easier method.

yes you an do it in a kitchen id with the dough hook on it I even do my recipe in a bread maker for 10 -15 min. then Im ready to go so I don’t let them rest . and I personally don’t like to use a grill because they don’t cook good, so I like to use a pan in the stove I always put 2 pans and let them heat in a medium heat and the tortillas are beautiful well cook and when you have boubbles in the tortilla that’s a good sing the your tortillas are going to be soft and good and well cooked.
and the more hot the water is the better so that’s why is better to do it on a machine so you will not burn .
enjoy!!!!

Not the way my grandmother makes them, but definitely a lot quicker! I’ll have to try this for dinner tonight.

I have been making our tortillas for a while now. (Not all the time, I admit I buy them sometimes). The recipe that I use as a fail safe uses shortening, but I have used a low fat one like this before. Of course, I inherited several cans of it when my parents moved cross country and left thier food storage behind. I prefer to use half white and half whole wheat in mine (all whole wheat dry out really fast in my experience).
Oh yeah, and I do it by hand, like making biscuits.

I can’t wait to make these!!! I have tried homemade tortillas before but they were so difficult to handle. My forearms were dead by the time I was done rolling them out. Thanks for posting this!

I’m a chef in Arizona and recently was asked how to make these. You’ve done a good job explaining. The Mexican lady I learned from always uses boiling water, this partially cooks the dough and you don’t need flour on your board. It also will allow you to have pretty thin tortillas. Food storage rocks! I love how you’re bringing it home to everyone. I think we are soul sisters!

To make whole wheat tortillas, would I need dough enhancers?

I made these this evening. They were so good. I re-named them oh…my…tortillas. That is what we said after we had our 1st bite. Even my kids said these were better than store bought. And they want me to make these from now on. That is also coming from my son who is EXTREMELY picky!!! Thanks so much. I tried another recipe for tortillas and it was BAD!!! I`m so glad to have found this one.

I’ve been wondering how to make these for ages. I tried once, but it was such a disappointing experience, I never tried again. Thanks for the encouragement! Your recipe is so much simplier to do than the one I tried. I hope they are as good as they sound!!

Can’t wait to try these! I don’t know what homemade tortillas taste like! 😮
I still have a big bag of mission tortillas .. I’ll wait until they are gone to try these!
If made with WW flour.. do we need to modify the recipe somehow???

I love your videos and I love to see you but, could your camera man point it to the product while you are mixing so we can see what is going on and if ours is looking the same?!
I am sorry if I missed this but, does the food processor have to have a dough hook to make the tortilla dough?
Thanks for all your hard work.

Lol! Most of the time I don’t have a camera man! My secret is out…I just put my little camera on a bunch of #10 cans and record. Sorry if you can’t see it that well…but I’m just ONE person and I try and do my best.

I just tried the tortillas tonight with my tacos. I bought some store bought tortillas as well to use as a backup, but there was no need. They were delicious! You also inspired me to try canned roast beef instead of ground beef and it was a masterpiece. Thanks Crystal!

This is the first tortilla tutorial I have watched (and read) that enabled me to make tortillas successfully. I used a different recipe, but the videos did an excellent job explaining how to roll them out – without them sticking to the counter or the board…Thank you 🙂

We live in Texas, and these taste almost exactly like our favorite local variety… except much better!! I love how there's only five ingredients vs. a phone book list of ingredients of the local one here. I've been trying my hand at a few different tortilla recipes, but this is the first that called for oil and it's the best. I will forever be making my own tortillas. It is so easy and cheap! THANK YOU!
Can you do this in a breadmaker?
I don't think so.
I did.
Nice recipe. I will try it soon.
How hot do you get your pancake griddle. I have an electric one.
These are wonderful! I used part whole wheat flour in my breadmaker on the dough cycle and let the dough mix and rest. It took extra water with the mixed flours and I used less oil and salt. I enjoyed them, but for company I will follow the recipe. I prefer them not cooked that much, perhaps that is because I used less oil. I will make these again and again. Thanks!
YEAH!
Freezing the dough did not effect the quality, but there was some discoloration with the dough on the outside being a little darker, you can knead them a bit to get it all one color. I let them come to room temperature before rolling and also rolled them with the dough cold – both ways made wonderful tortillas from the frozen dough. Thank you, thank you, thank you …. so glad I found your website.
OMG – Best recipe ever. I used a little less oil and a little more water. Put in bread machine (knead 4 minutes), rest 15, cut into 6 balls, rest 15 min, squished in tortilla press for that perfect round shape, then rolled them out and cooked at medium on the stove in a flat pan.
thanks for your recipes. the book East of Eden has recipes for making your own soya milk, soya cream, soya cheese. many recipes from 1930’s
Halfway through chicken enchiladas I realized I did not have tortillas. I made these from scratch & they were so easy. My recipe made eight 8-inch-ish tortillas.
I’m so excited to try these! Can you use beans as the oil in this recipe?
