I hope you all had as much fun as I did learning more about “The Wonderful World of Bread” Next we’ll be talking about homemade noodles and crackers. (YUM!) And remember, we’ll re-visit bread when we talk more about sourdough and it’s role in everyday baking along with emergency baking (i.e. if you don’t have yeast or can’t get to a store to buy yeast)

Now on to the fun stuff, Yes, that is correct! You’ve asked for it and you’re getting it…a FREE bread handout. It includes the Bread FAQ’s, how to make your own dough enhancers, and some of my favorite bread recipes along with links to the how-to videos on how to make them! (Yes, every recipe included on this handout also has a how-to video on my blog that you can watch.) Download the handout and feel free to pass it along to friends, family, or people you don’t want knocking on your door in an emergency. 😉 Let’s get everyone using their food storage!

p.s. I’ve had a lot of requests to get more conversion chart magnets available….which I have also done. Click HERE for more information on them and how you can order yours. Last time they went really fast, so if you’re interested I wouldn’t procrastinate. 😉

  1. I made your e-z bread recipe last week it turned out GREAT and was soooo easy.

At first I was concerned the dough was too sticky but put the towel over the bowl for it to rise and came back to a beautiful dough that was just right.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I ordered your book and can’t wait to get it!!

  3. This is perfect timing since I just got my wheat grinder! By the way, I noticed that you use a K-tec which is what I bought. Any suggestions for a quick clean up?

    Thanks!

  5. Thank you so much for these handouts. I love them. I was bringing the laptop in the kitchen everytime I made bread and your breadsticks. Now I can print these out and keep them on my recipe stand. These are such a blessing. 🙂

  7. Hey Crystal,
The bread handout is great for those just getting started. Thanks for being willing to share with everybody. The only thing I would “correct” is that you do NOT need a tablespoon of gluten for every cup of flour. I use about 12+ cups of wheat+white flour for my bread recipe (that you posted and I was SOOOOO flattered!!) and I only use 2 T. of gluten for the whole recipe. It works great, holds together, slices easily, etc. So, you don’t need that much gluten to make it work. Keep up the great stuff!!!! 🙂

  11. I am new to the whole wide world of cooking/baking let alone food storage. Since my girls think the Daddy is in charge of the cooking…they were more than skeptical of my attempts at anything to do in the kitchen. But after I made your banana bread…I am now a hero! Tasty and so easy even I could do it..bought your magents and book and would buy probably anything else you created/ told me to! Thanks for making me excited about cooking and food storage and just being confident to try something new! YOU ROCK!!!!

  13. Crystal -Ages ago I read and liked your suggestion about assembling your bread machine bread and putting it into a baggie for future quick use….measuring once. One odd question – can you freeze the yeast? I have all these little fleishmans yeast packs in the fridge – I was wondering who would know – and your name popped into my head!

  15. Do you use whole wheat flour in your french bread?

Ctdaffodil–I keep my yeast in the freezer and have never had any problems with it.

  17. I already have a dough enhancer that I use when I bake – what would be the best way to alter your bread recipe to try and make the cinnamon rolls?

  19. I am new to grinding my own wheat. I grind mine in a Vitamix with the dry blade. Does the Vitamix give the same results as a wheat grinder? Or do I really need a wheat grinder to get the best results?

Thanks, I love all your tips!

  21. Grain Mill Clean-up Tip:

I use a dry pastry brush to clean up my K-Tec Grain Mill after grinding wheat. It works great!

  23. ABSOLUTELY freeze your yeast! It will last much longer. I do it all the time! 🙂

  24. Actually, you do need that much gluten if you're using ALL whole wheat flour. White flour (sooo not very nutritious) has a lot more gluten already in it, so if you're doing half & half, it works great with less gluten. But more is definitely needed for 100% whole wheat. You would notice the difference, big time, if you made one batch with more – and one batch with less.

  25. Excellent recipe. It made the best loafs of bread ever. These were my first loaves with home ground hard red wheat, using a Vitalmill.
The crumb was excellent, better than store bought. Taste was very good, light considering its almost all whole wheat. Crust was thin and soft.

No sour/bitter taste of store bought whole wheat flour.

I did leave out 1/4 cup WW flour and added 1/4 cup fresh oat flour on a double batch. I don't know if it made any difference, next time I'll make it exactly and see.

    Thanks!
