So I found a turkey on sale at the grocery store. I know I’ve heard of a bunch of people roasting turkeys or chickens in the Sun Oven. I figured finding a turkey now for only 89 cents a pound was a sign that today was the day to see if people were telling the truth. I hurried home and got my Sun Oven ready and prepped the turkey. I have to say that I was really, really surprised! I was not expecting the turkey to brown at all. But it did! It was the coolest thing! Plus, the turkey was moist and tender and we had a great time having turkey sandwiches months after Thanksgiving. It was actually quite refreshing! So, if you’re brave enough to try a turkey in the Sun Oven here is how you’ll prep it.
STEP ONE: Start with a clean sink. I like to clean mine with Comet.
STEP TWO: Remove innards and rinse the chicken thoroughly.
STEP THREE: Pat the inside of the turkey dry with paper towels.
STEP FOUR: Rub salt on the inside and in the cavity. The salt helps keep bacteria at bay.
STEP FIVE: Salt and pepper the outside of the turkey.
STEP SIX: Place the turkey in a pan and inside an oven bag.
STEP SEVEN: Disinfect all areas that the turkey touched and wash your hands!
STEP EIGHT: Place turkey in the Sun Oven. Be sure to re position the Sun Oven every 30-45 minutes to make sure it stays at a safe cooking temperature.
STEP NINE: Double check that the internal temperature of the turkey is safe before pulling it out.
STEP TEN: Slice it and EAT!
STEP ELEVEN: Take the carcass and bones and place in a slow cooker covered in water. Season with salt and pepper. Cook on low over night. In the morning, turn it off and allow to cool. The liquid is now awesome broth and you will find yourself with a lot of meat that you almost threw away! The meat is already shredded and works great in tacos, enchiladas, or anything calling for shredded meat. You’ll get an entire second meal out of that meat and it’s like getting it for free!
That looks absolutely delicious!!! We deep fry turkeys if we can find one at a reasonable price, but I may need to drag out the Sun Oven and try this (if I can find a turkey). Thanks!
