  1. HA HA HA!! You are NOT alone in thinking that little F filter was trash! I was visiting my mom and she had washed hers, left it out on the counter to dry and I was cleaning up after lunch with my kids and threw it away. I was mortified when I realized what I had done. She nows has 5 of the those, as I wanted to make sure she never lost one again. Thanks for the videos!! My mom has one and LOVES, LOVES, LOVES it. I am getting one this summer and can not wait. Now I know what not to do! {I never read instructions either, so I guess I need to when my blender arrives}

  2. Crystal –

I appreciate your wealth of information. I can't seem to find your post on making bread mixes – Can you direct me to where it is?

Also, I read previous posts in the bread making section and some people had problems with the bread baking properly. Just and FYI for others – check your oven temperature. I ground the most perfect wheat, made the most perfect dough and then it globbed up and failed in the overn. I took the bread into the Bosh store to see what I did wrong and they advised me it was most likely my oven temperature. I would preheat the oven to 400 – but after testing I learned that my oven wasn't going above 325. We've since fixed the problem, but I never knew that your oven temps could be so off.

    1. Hi Sarah,

Not sure when Crystal might be back to respond, and since I know the recipe she is referring to I wanted to jump in and reply your question. I think it’s the EZ Bread recipe found here.

I make this bread every day it’s absolutely delicious!

  3. So, I'm using mine in the garage without a filter because mine got lost. How did that ruin your machine. (I'm starting to panic a little). My machine looks exactly like yours, only I inherited it from my grandma and it is probably 20 years old. Was there any way to fix/clean your old one? Did it HAVE to be replaced?

  4. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos for all of us!

  5. The pitfalls that Crystal described from not reading her instruction manual are so common!! Lots of people I know wonder why this mill is so dusty, and then find out they are not using it properly. I have had my Kitchen Mill for 20+ years and love it. If taken care of properly, it will last for many, many years.

One note: I was at the Blendtec store a couple of weeks ago, and the man at the desk told me that the new “F” filters are more dense than the old ones, and should not be pushed all the way inside the side opening on the machine; the filter should stick out a little. This filter also helps with air flow (as well as the cyclone cup), so the opening should not be “stopped up” airtight. I brush my filter out every time I use it, and then wash it in soapy water occasionally.

Also, remember to unlatch the clasps one side at a time; this is really important because if handled incorrectly, the clasps can break off.

One last thing: I always turn the grain mill on before adding grain to the hopper. (Grind popcorn on the largest setting; it makes a wonderful cornmeal.)

  6. You really should use ear protection with this grain mill. I have this mill, and I use ear protection on me and any kids that are in the kitchen with me. This grinder has an extremely loud motor, and it can damage your hearing. I love this mill too. I am unhappy that my dial for the fineness of my flour broke, and the side clip for the filter side broke. So I have to hold it shut, which after a few minutes makes my hand hurt. But I love how fine it grinds!

  7. Thank you for the videos on wheat grinders. I have a K-tec, and lost the f filter years ago, thinking I didn't really need it. I've also had to do all my grinding in the garage because of the mess from grinding without the filter. After watching your videos I did a search and ordered the filters. I can't wait to see how it works actually grinding wheat in the kitchen now! Thanks for the tips!!

  8. I have a nutrimill and it is a bit bigger but I love it. It's really not that loud. I was just going to mention that on mine the way to tell that all the kernals have gone through is that the pitch will change. The pitch will go higher. I'm not sure if that happens on all mills but I just thought I would throw that out there.

  9. I love my Blendtec too. I live in a small apartment and loved it for it's size and price. I leave mine out on the counter in the corner and people have actually asked me where my grinder was, because they didn't see it! I know the other more expensive ones you don't have to clean, but I think it's a minor inconvenience for the difference in price (about $100 less!) and size. I have never had a problem with dust and I don't think it's all that loud. It's like a loud vaccum, so I use it without protection. Thanks for the great video!

  10. For bread, you actually want to grind your wheat on a medium setting, not the finest, but not the coarsest, either. I learned this at a cooking class at a Bosch store where they were demonstrating making bread and used a nutrimill to grind the wheat, which is what I have. I don't remember the reason why you don't want the flour as fine as for pastries, but I think the reason may have been that the medium-coarse flour works better with the gluten to get a light bread.

  11. I thinking the word for which you were searching to describe where you put the wheat as it grinds is “hopper”

  12. I would really love to be able to grind my own wheat! We love Kamut Khorasan Wheat so much and I would love to be able to buy it in bulk and grind it up as needed. Thanks for sharing this!

  13. can you suggest a good hand wheat grinder for emergency storage

  14. Crystal, how long does last once it is grinded? And how did you test the temp of your oven?

  16. GranmaJodie  I am 86 years old and am still learning “how” to use Food Storage. In a recent Relief Society meeting (LDS) on the subject of Food Storage your blog/website was given as a reference for good information. I have all my dehydrated food supply but was getting totally frustrated trying to find “taste-good” recipes. I love to cook and pride myself on being a good cook so thank you, Crystal, for the excellent job you are doing…I count you as a much needed blessing. P.S. My granddaughter’s name is Crystal!!!

    1. Thank you!
