This is the pot roast my mom made growing up. To me there is NOTHING BETTER than walking into my house and smelling the smells of my childhood, not to mention this food storage recipe is EASY and has LITTLE mess! It didn’t always include as much food storage but you know me…I think almost any recipe can become a food storage recipe! Try it for yourself…
Slow Cooker Pot Roast
1 Pot Roast, thawed (remember you can’t put frozen meat in a slow cooker)
1 Potato for EACH person, cut into quarters
1-2 Onions, cut into eighths
1/4 C. Carrots for EACH person, cut into chunks (or use baby carrots)
1 packet Dry Onion Soup Mix
1-2 cans Cream of Mushroom Soup (which I of course made with my magic mix…so delicious! Click HERE for the recipe)
1 bag frozen peas
Directions:
Place meat in bottom center of slow cooker. Place cut potatoes, onions, and carrots around meat and along edges. Combine soup and dry onion soup mix and pour over meat and vegetables. (Make sure that your potatoes are covered or they’ll be purple!) Cook on low heat 6-8 hours. During last hour of cooking pour frozen peas on top (if you do it before the last hour they tend to get mushy). After it is finished cooking and depending on how thick you like your gravy you can empty the meat and vegetables and thicken the gravy with more magic mix (pretty great, huh?), corn starch, or flour in a pan/pot over the stove.

I crock ALL the time with frozen meat and I’ve never had any problems with it in the 10 years I’ve been cooking. As long as you put cold meat in a cold crock and then cook for 6-8 hours, it’s totally fine. Just wondering why you wouldn’t cook frozen meat in a slow cooker?

Crystal, I was wondering the same thing. Why not cook with frozen meat? I think that if you do use frozen meat it is more sanitary. There is less chance for meat spoilage, and germs or bacteria. The only reason I would defrost my meat first is if i was going to sear in the juices by browning it on all sides first in a skilet. Also by using a frozen roast there is less clean up. Oh by the way if you cook your roast on high for 3-4 hours you can have a nice roast earyly for Sunday dinner, with out having to wake up at the crack of dawn.

I hardly EVER put THAWED meat in my slow cooker. My meat’s always jucier and more tender and I agree with the others about not risking the spoilage issue and it’s one more step.

Alright, I’ll add to the group and say I almost always use frozen meat as well unless it specifically asks that you cook the meat first, and only one of my crock pot recipes does. I love pot roast in the crockpot and honestly, I don’t even know any other way to cook it. π

I use frozen meat too! Before I did though, I checked it out on the “Crock-Pot” website, it said that you just need to add some liquid first and cook it a little longer.

My sister’s Crockpot cracked in half the first time she tried putting a frozen roast in it.:(
I have personally never tried it because of the risk of cracking the crock and that I thought it would take a much longer time to cook.

Ditto. After reading the comments I found that I’m not the only one using frozen meat! LOL! That’s the only way I roll. I buy all meats in advance and freeze them and cook most everything in the crock pot and have never had any problems.

I am on the confused side as well – one thing I love about cooking frozen meat is that it does take longer which is great because both my husband and I work. The meat isn’t overcooked when we cook it for 10 hours on low when it starts out frozen!

Me too!! I put frozem meat, chicken, and porkk chops in my slow cooker all the time. I have never had a problem with it. I too just add some warm water before my meat and cook longer.

I cracked a brand new crockpot by putting a frozen pork roast in it. You have to add some liquid and then its fine.

Someone else mentioned making your own onion soup mix. It’s a great way to save money and cut down on preservatives and other who-knows-what that’s hiding in the packet. Here’s a recipe in case you don’t have one:
3/4 c. instant minced onion
4 tsp. onion powder
1/3 c. beef bouillon powder
1/4 tsp. crushed celery seed
1/4 tsp. sugar
Mix all spices and store in airtight container. Use 2-3 tablespoons in place of 1 packet of onion soup mix.
We are trying your crock-pot lasagna today. Can’t wait!
