Thanks to Rhonda (one of my readers) we have an updated price comparison sheet since the LDS cannery just changed their prices on food storage items. This way you can see which prices went up and which went down. So great! This should make it easy to see which items are good to stock up on now. Make sure and leave a comment thanking Rhonda for all of her hard work making this sheet for all of us!

Can a non-Mormon use the LDS cannery?
Yes!
Thank you! I needed this!
Kristina – Yes, anyone is welcome to use the LDS cannery's. If you follow the link to the new price sheet, you can find a location near you (see the link in the top right of the page).
Do they ship? There is no store close to where I live.
They will ship certain items (red wheat, oats, rice, pinto beans, and a few
others.) Follow this link for more information:

I just printed the new list from the cannery with the price changes {written in} for the ladies in our branch. I should have waited a few days, your list is much nicer! Thanks
Rhonda ,
Thanks for taking the time to write up the price update sheet !
It makes it easier to see the differences quickly .
Thank you for the great list.
How often do the cannery prices change? Will the milk stay at this increased price for a long time or does it fluctuate quite often? Does anyone know of a good place to buy dried milk?
Thanks, Rhonda!
I almost bought milk at the cannery two weeks ago but decided to wait a while- drats.
Ansley,
Just compare the powdered milk price from three years ago; you'll feel better about the new price of $1.40/lb. Back then it ws $2.40!
And everyone, thanks for your thank-yous! I'm glad to know it's so helpful.

There is a discount grocery chain that is called Aldi, but they aren't everywhere. They have decent prices on canned goods (like soups and such) as well as oil & powdered milk
Do you know where I can buy and #10 canner, shown on you tube.
Thanks for the video (above) “Canning Isn’t Scary.” Answered buncha questions.
Here are a couple more questions, if anyone here can advise:
How many gallons of milk do you get out of one #10 can (which is 4.1 lbs)? I think I calculated 4 gallons (12 cups to a #10 can divided by 3 cups to make a gallon equals 4 gallons reconstituted milk) , but is that correct? Also, same with a 25 pound bag of milk – is it about 25 gallons? Or can someone provide a more accurate measure?
As you can see, I am trying to find a more economical source of milk for my family. Right now we pay at lowest about $2.89 a gallon for 2%. I realize the LDS cannery dry milk is nonfat and that would be OK, but I am wondering what the per gallon cost and savings would be. Thanks!
The 25# bag from the cannery makes 105 cups of milk, or 26.25 gallons. The price today (5/26/11) is $47.20 for the bag, or about $1.84/gallon. The #10 can should make about 4 gallons.
Ansley, SUPER! Thanks, you’re awesome!!!
PS – does your family drink this or just cook w/it and keep it in storage? I remember drinking some at my friend’s a long time ago and although he and his family hated it, I thought it was fine. I have also heard LDS cannery milk is some of the “worse tasting” out there (LOL!) but it is very economical. Also I have read you can add a bit of vanilla and/or sugar to the mixed batch and it improves the overall flavor of reconst milk by a lot.

It’s not the worst out there! It was 10 years ago but it is much better
tasting now.
OK, my family has been drinking it for a week. No complaints from 6 and 3 year olds. My husband said it “tasted kind of like water” and I said, “It’s non-fat!” and he said, “Oh, that’s why. Well then, it’s fine.” LOL. And I have been sucking it down with a straw because I am pregnant w/#3 right now and totally craving milk. It’s great! It tastes a little like canned evaporated milk, but without the can. Which means, it tastes like milk.
I got to can 6 cans, even though I only purchased one. The process was very simple, just as previously reported. 🙂 I am going back tomorrow for the 25# bag for the household. Our “cheap” fluid milk prices have just gone up another $0.10 per gallon in the last week. 🙁

Unfortunately, they tasted milk alternatives as well. So they weren’t
really taste tasting REAL powdered milk v. REAL powdered milk.
Good point.
