Whole wheat doesn’t need to be confusing, or gross for that matter either!  We always suggest getting hard white wheat because the flavor is easier to disguise (for the best price, visit your local LDS Home Storage Center or online as well http://bit.ly/ldsfoodstorage) Most people have a hard time with wheat because they don’t simply look at it as flour.  Viewing wheat as flour, means it can go in a myriad of recipes, your own recipes.  To make it easy, we’ve gathered our best tips for using whole wheat in any recipe.  Promise, you’ll be amazed as you watch your family enjoy eating their favorite recipes made with whole wheat.

Tips For Using Whole-Wheat Flour In Your Recipes

  1. Try it in desserts first—who can turn down a cookie?
  2. Try using half white flour and half whole-wheat flour. It’s not necessary to substitute whole-wheat flour for ALL of the white flour in every recipe, and if you’re just starting to use whole-wheat flour, such a shock could turn your family off to wheat. If your family is extra finicky, start with 1 tablespoon of whole-wheat flour in the bottom of each cup of all-purpose flour and increase the amount of whole-wheat flour each time you cook. The important thing is that you’re using your wheat flour and increasing nutrient intake where you can.
  3. Use recipes that your family already enjoys and is familiar with.
  4. Disguise wheat flour—which is light brown in color—in bread, cakes, and cookie recipes that contain brown sugar, molasses, chocolate, or fruit or vegetables (such as bananas, applesauce, zucchini, or carrots).
  5. Use whole-wheat flour in recipes that also call for oats or oat flour. Oats have a hearty flavor that helps disguise the flavor of whole wheat.
  6. Remember: Don’t warn your family that there is whole wheat in the food they’re about to eat. If you don’t say anything, they’ll assume you followed the recipe just as you always have. So sit back, smile to yourself and watch your family members gobble up the food . . . wheat and all!
  7. Sneak whole wheat flour into everything you make, easily! Add a few cups of whole wheat flour to your flour canister and give it a good stir.  While whole wheat flour does lose a small amount of nutrition after it is ground, it will last just fine on your counter for 4-6 months before spoiling.
