This is my ABSOLUTE favorite recipe and ever since I got it from my sister-in-law we haven’t bought pizza (contrary to what my husband says on the video :). The other great thing about making this as pizza is that you can make the crust in the morning and then top it with your toppings in the evening and have dinner ready in under 10 minutes! I love meals you can make most of earlier in the day when life isn’t so busy. It is so easy, makes NO mess (okay well, just a little mess), and is DELICIOUS. Kids love it (especially when you let them pick the toppings and add them to the pizza)! Everytime I make these breadsticks for company it is a HUGE hit and they always ask for the recipe, so who better to share it with than all of you!!
30 Minute Breadsticks OR No-Fail Deep Dish Pizza Crust
(If it is too thick for your family, you can either half the recipe or put one full recipe onto two cookie sheets)
2 1/2 C. Medium Hot Water
5 tsp. SAF Instant Yeast*
2 Tbsp. Sugar
3 Tbsp. Oil
1 tsp. Salt
6 C. Flour (you can do half all-purpose and half white wheat or 100% whole wheat)
1 to 2 Cubes of Butter
Directions:
1. Pour medium hot water in mixing bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top and allow to dissolve.
2. Add sugar, salt, and oil. Gradually add approximately 6 cups of flour.
3. Melt 1-2 cubes butter on cookie sheet in oven as it is heating to 400 degrees and melt in oven. 4. Place dough on cookie sheet and press to fill pan, make sure butter gets on top of the dough.
5. Allow to double in size (About 10-15 minutes)
6. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes or until desired browning is accomplished.
7. Cut into strips or top with favorite pizza toppings.
* When using regular yeast change amount to 2 Tbsp.

How do you think this would do with whole wheat? Any modifications you’d make for that?

Okay, my name is Julie also and I was planning on asking the exact same question as the Julie above me. How crazy is that??:) I’d love to make this recipe, but I only use Whole Wheat flour now. Any advice?

1-2 cubes? As in 1/2 cup each? Really? If so, this seems like so much fat, really?

Julie-s,
I do make this whole wheat sometimes and it turns out great. When I do it as pizza I usually do whole wheat because there are so many flavors going on but I’ve done breadsticks before whole wheat and they’re good too. Also, I only use one cube of butter. My neighbor only uses 1/2 of a cube. It’s all what your family likes. The original recipe I received from my sister-in-law is 1-2 cubes. It’s up to how you like it! 🙂

Okay, I made these last night. I was trying to figure out what kind of yeast I have and then realized…aren’t 5 tsp and 2 Tbsp the same thing?
They are good. I think 1/2 stick would be sufficient too. I’m excited to try this as a yummy pizza crust. Especially since Boboli is way too much money!

Shayleen,
Close…there are 3 tsp. in 1 Tablespoon…so just one more tsp if you don’t have the fast acting yeast. I’m so glad you tried it! I guess everyone now knows my love for butter. 🙂

These sound really delicious! A couple of questions – sorry if they’re answered by the video, but we have s-l-o-w internet so I haven’t watched it. The recipe says to press the dough to fill the cookie sheet, making sure the butter gets on top. So do you roll it out partway and flip it over so the butter is on the top? Also, it sounds like if you’re doing pizza, you bake it before you add the toppings, so how long do you bake it once you add the toppings? Thanks for all the fun recipes – this is a great site! 🙂

I’m super excited about this recipe because my recipe for breadsticks takes forever. I have the same question as Camille, I was wondering how long you bake the pizza after adding the toppings. Also in my recipe it has you cut the dough into breadsticks before you cook it. Do you think this would work with this recipe?

Camille and Brown Bunch,
When you press the dough onto the pan with the butter it will force some of the butter to go on top of the dough. Just make sure it covers the dough. Also, I bake the pizza for about 5 minutes once the toppings are on. Just long enough for the cheese to melt. Let me know how it works for you!

i make breadsticks basically the same way, but cut them before baking. I use a pizza cutter and cut 1-inch strips along the short side of the dough. Then cut it again once, down the middle long-wise. This makes about 32 6-inch breadsticks.

I do the exact same thing. It gets the buttery yumminess all over the sides of the breadsticks that way too, and it’s less thick to cut through.
I actually do the same thing too and I cut the butter amount in half.
MMM! Looks very good!

I made this pizza a while ago and we loved it, so I’m making it again today! We’re going to use two cookie sheets today because last time was a little too thick for my husband’s taste, but I loved it!

What size cookie sheet is that? Or is it a jelly roll pan? I don’t have sheets like that but I will be getting some this week and I want to make sure I get the right size. This looks good…thanks so much.

My whole family loved the bread sticks. My husband says they are better than Olive Gardens! I have found that halving the recipe and making the dough in my bread maker works great too. ( I don’t have a kitchen aid type mixer) also I used just 4 T of butter and made sure to butter my hands before spreading it around. I am sure more experienced cooks would already know that and if not it becomes obvious as soon as you begin spreading.

We are making this in about 5 minutes! We are out of all purpose flour so we are grinding up wheat from our long term storage and making cheese sticks 🙂

I don’t know if you check these comments anymore, but I was wondering if anyone has tried using olive oil instead of butter to grease the pan/bread? I love the taste of EVOO and I think it would be healthier, too.
I’ve used 1/3 cup olive oil for this recipe when I first start it out. It works just fine. 1/2 cup was a little too greasy for my family but others might like it. It gave it an almost deep fried and crispy crust. Good but a little too rich for my tastes. I know it’s been two years but good luck!

I made these breadsticks for dinner last night, and they were great! I only had 2 cups of white flour, so I had to use the remaining 4 cups with wheat (plus I think I might have added too much water because I ended up using around 7 cups total). I love that you don’t have to mess up your counter tops with flour, and that you don’t have to make them forever in advance. I think that the use of all of that wheat flour kind of squashed the butter taste, but we still liked them, I’ll try white flour next week and see. We have pizza & breadsticks once a week for dinner, and I thought that this made a little too much for a family of 4; so next week I think that I’ll split the dough and make a small pizza and a small pan of breadsticks. Thanks for another great recipe!

Hi Crystal,
This looks great and easy to make. Can you divide this dough up into 1 lb balls and freeze? I want to make pizza kits for busy nights and this looks like it would make that very easy to do.
Thanks for such a GREAT website because I’ve been into food storage for about 2 years and haven’t found anything quite as comprehensive and FUN.

Wow, made these with my 4 yr old and 2 yr old last night; they are just as great as Crystal says they are! Not much mess, easy to make, and kids love to see that flour can become bread in just 30 minutes. These breadsticks are REALLY fantastic!!
(another plus is that because they are made with whole wheat, they are filling so we don’t require as large of helpings on pasta dinners!)
I've been wanting to make this pizza for weeks…We made it today, SUPER EASY!! It is so good, can't wait to make bread sticks with this dough.
The only thing I'd do differently, is cut the dough recipe in half for a thinner crust. Thanks Crystal 🙂

Just made this last week after a few months hiatus from it and remembered how much I love it! It’s definitely back on as a weekly dinner now.
I use a similar recipe for breadsticks. But, I have also changed the garlic salt to cinnamon sugar. SO YUMMY!. You can make a little powdered sugar drizzle to go on top. YUM! If you want a thin crust pizza, you could make one batch of dough and divide it in 2. Make on a pizza and one dessert. What a quick meal!
Totally agree!
Made breadsticks out of it…. Yum-o can’t wait to make pizza!!
How do you decide how much butter to use?
I saw this last year after Halloween! I wondered how you make pizza sauce with tomato paste? Thanks for the awesome website- love the videos!
Just tried the bread sticks yummy. Was t good for the diet but they were soo good thank you .
