To a lot of people this step of food storage is the scariest but, like most food storage principles, it is actually quite easy!  I get asked questions all the time about what and LDS cannery is like and/or what it’s like to can things at home and since the LDS Canneries just dropped their prices on their food, I figured now would be the PERFECT time to show you how it’s done!  You don’t need to be LDS to take advantage of an LDS cannery…we want EVERYONE prepared! 🙂 Watch the video below to see how to work the “canner” or sealer.

Now like I said before prices have just DROPPED at the LDS canneries.  I was so happily surprised when I went to purchase powdered milk and I found out that the price has been reduced by 30-percent! (That means that a can of powdered milk just dropped $2 a can…that is a HUGE savings!) That means that if you were to make a gallon of milk from powdered milk it would cost only $1.06, sweetened condensed milk would cost about 60-cents and evaporated milk costs about 20-cents made from powdered milk.  Now that will save your family A LOT of money!

I also found out that the canneries have items already canned that you can purchase with out canning!  Those items are rice, oats, RED wheat, pinto beans, and a starter kit including the previously mentioned items.  They used to cost more to purchase because they were pre-canned but now they are the same price!  You can also purchase those items online, by clicking HERE.  So it’s a great day to hit the cannery!  (And you can’t say it’s scary anymore or that you don’t know what to do! 🙂

I’ve included some great links for you to use.  The first link is a link to the current pricing sheet, the second is a list of the price changes that I got from my cannery, and the third is also a handout I got from my cannery that helps breakdown how many cans you’ll need for your bulk purchases.  I know you can do it!

Current LDS Cannery Pricing Sheet

Breakdown of the Price Changes (so you can see how much cheaper things are now!)

Bulk to Can Conversion (so you know how many cans you need to get for your product)

  1. Can people who aren’t LDS still purchase things from LDS canneries? I would love to take advantage of some of these prices and the canning equipment, but I don’t know if we would be allowed to if we aren’t LDS

  3. Wow – that was a great video – I love the addition of music. Your site has grown so much!!

Just like the 1st comment- can non LDS people purchase from the cannery? I think the closest one to me is in the Boston area…but it might be worth the trip.

also – can you only do #10 cans? Do they have smaller ones – I can’t imagine having a #10 full of dehydrated onions….

  7. No you don’t have to be LDS…we want everyone prepared! And ctdaffodil you’d be surprised how quickly you’d go through a #10 of dehydrated onions. I don’t even buy fresh onions anymore! But yes they do have mylar pouches available which are smaller.

  11. We do use quite a bit of onion flakes – I just finished washing and drying a large coffee can (the boys want to make a lantern with it) and was thinking – Man – thats a TON of Onions!

  13. Actually the mylar bags hold more food in a smaller container, and they are flood water resistant since they won’t rust. However other natural disasters like tornados will rip the bags to shred. I have decided that we are going to try and keep at least half of our long term food storage in mylar bags. We live in the midwest and could get either one of the natural disasters.

As for non-LDS people that would like to go to their local cannery, you can either contact the local LDS group and go with them, or contact the cannery and set up an appointment. More helpers at the cannery makes the trip much faster.

Our ward is going up there with 2 other local wards in August. I am going to print out the price changes sheet so people can see that food storage is even more economical that a few months ago. Thanks!

  16. I wish we had a cannery closer to take abvantage of it. Our nearest bishop’s storehouse is about 8 hours away.

  18. LOVE your video! I’ve never canned anything, so it was helpful for me to get an idea. So excited about the lower prices too!

But I LOVE your apron too! Did you make it? I want one!

    Thanks for all you do!

  20. Crystal, thank you SO much for posting this! What awesome timing, too! I just bought 65lb of sugar at Albertsons this morning that needs to be canned, but I’ve never done it before, so I was SO very excited to check your site and see the video this morning – thank you, thank you!

  22. Becca- You have to be careful with the mylar bags. My friend had mice that ate through hers! Yuck! I now store everything in #10 cans. I think that the mylar bags would still work, though, if you put them into a rubbermaid container or something like it.

  24. a question about oxygen absorbers. Can you put them in your cans and vacuum seal the leftovers? Will they still work if you opened them, used some then vacuum sealed the leftovers?

  27. Is everything at the cannery dry? Do they sell things like canned peaces? I know when i make a peach cobbler I like to use the canned ones in the winter – opening 1 #10 can would make 2 cobblers and save me tons of time…

  35. Rusting cans really isn’t a problem. If they get wet from a flood, etc., you sanitize them in a water and liquid bleach solution, let them dry well and you’re good to go. Some areas are doing away with mylar pouches. Any rust on the outside takes quite a while to get to the inside and spoil the contents.

A number 10 can of dried onions goes quickly. Except for when I want raw onions, such as for hamburgers, I use dried onions almost exclusively.

I love looking at your site. I’m an old woman and haven’t learned anything new (yet!), but enjoy being reminded of some of what I know.

  38. At the cannery, you can also buy things in bulk. You can purchase a 25lb bag of black beans without canning it. If you have empty food grade buckets (because you have been rotating your storage) you can refill your buckets with the bulk bags. We bought oats and beans this way from the cannery to restock what we have eaten.

To answer ctdaffodil’s question: In a few (very few) areas in the U.S., there are wet-pack canneries, where items such as peaches are canned. However, most canneries are dry-pack canneries, which means only dry items are packed there. If you want to have #10 cans of peaches, Costco and Sam’s Club sell them all the time.

Another option for peaches is home canning. Every year I can about 80 quarts of peaches. My peach trees are still too young to give me enough to can, so I order from a farmer in St. George, Utah (I’m in Las Vegas). The farmer delivers beautiful peaches here at the peak of ripeness.

For pears, however, I buy them on sale at the grocery store in the fall (last year they were 50 cents a pound). I can about 140 quarts of pears a year.

I’ll be going to the LDS cannery tomorrow. I’ll be showing several people how to can for the first time. It’s pretty simple, and it is fun working with a group of people to get everyone’s orders canned.

  42. Thank you so much for the video!! I’ve got a ton of food storage mainly because of your site! I love the recipes and have started using more food storage into my everyday cooking. I’ve wanted to learn about checking out the canner and you showed me what I would need to know! Thanks again!

PS – You need to sell your book in Washington!

  46. Even though people are saying you don’t have to be LDS to buy from the cannery, it is still discouraged here in Las Vegas. I am not LDS and just got home from the cannery and they didn’t seem to happy to sell to me and my friend. They did, however, say it would be better if we came with an LDS person. So it can be done, you just have to know how to go about it!

  53. It is the policy at the cannery by us (KS) that if you are not LDS then you have to come with someone who is LDS, you cannot just show-up by yourself, so be sure and call and find out the canneries policy before you go, and if you need an LDS friend to go with you, I am sure you could easily find someone willing to go! 🙂

  56. Thanks for all of the great clarification! If you don’t know someone LDS I would look up local LDS wards and try to get ahold of the bishop. Maybe there is an activity you can join or maybe he’ll know a member that could go with you.

  68. Erin,

Looking at the time you posted–where you at the Las Vegas cannery around 11 o’clock today, and did you walk into the back with your friend to check out what was carried there? If so, I saw you! You could have added your things onto our order and canned with us! We had a really small order today.

    Chris,

You are welcome to come with me as well to the Las Vegas cannery.

Basically, we have assigned days (they were decided a year ago) where our specific congregation (ward) is assigned to go.

    Erin,

I was busy teaching people how to use the canner and getting our items from the back. I am so sorry I did not get a chance to talk to you! Please email me and you can come with us the next time we have an assignment. It should be in 2 months.
    brandy@theprudenthomemaker.com

Please contact me and I’ll help you get something. I feel really horrible that you felt unwelcome today. I would have gladly added your order on to ours.

Please contact me and I’ll help you get something. I feel really horrible that you felt unwelcome today. I would have gladly added your order on to ours.

  73. Chris – I love the foods at Whole Paycheck but I just can’t justify the prices….I’m more inclined to hit there in the winter months. We just had a bulk organic heathfood place open in town – I may order oats, wheat and almonds from the owner…

  75. ctdaffodil,

My friends on the east coast like to buy their grains from Amish stores. You’re quite likely to get organic as well, though it sounds like you may have found a great place already.

You could just buy your buckets from someplace like Honeyville grain and store your grains in those.

    Erin and Chris,

Thanks for the emails! I’ll be meet you both in August to can some peaches at my house!

If anyone else in Las egas is reading and wants to go to the cannery, our next assignment is in September; let me know and you can come with us!

  80. So sad that your cannery takes that approach. Our cannery in Boise is so incredibly welcoming and open to anyone coming at any time. We have 2 couples that serve there weekly and they are always talking about members and nonmembers just showing up. We have a dry and wet pack cannery. We have a price sheet for the wet pack stuff as well. You just need to find out where the wet pack canneries are and if you have one nearby. We are also blessed to have 1 of two peach orchards nearby. We are able to take the dropped or slightly damaged peaches, apples for free. Awesome! We are also able to get cherries for $.60/lb and apricots for even cheaper if we serve. It is worth checking into church orchards in your area if you have them.

I am so glad that you posted the price sheet. We were just talking about it at church. So this came in great time.

    1. Can you give me an address or phone number for the cannery in boise? I live in La Grande, OR and would like to go there to can? Is there an online link to their order form?

  82. To answer Erinthebeekeeper’s question (I hope that’s okay):

Yes, you can vacuum seal any leftover oxygen absorbers, such as with those sealers you can get at Costco or wherever, and they will stay good. (I don’t know for sure how long — definitely from one month to the next.) You can also use one of the blue clips from the cannery to seal the bag, and that works fine too as long as you get it on properly.

If you have the oxygen absorbers out too long before sealing, they will start to get warm due to the chemical reaction. New oxygen absorbers are soft & pliable; when they are totally used up they are hard.

  84. Actually, you are wrong. We called the local cannery and were told that demand is up so much that only members of the LDS church are allowed to buy or can. If we know an LDS member, we can come in to use the facilty, but otherwise, the answer to outsiders was no.

The link you sent to order fromt he LDS pantry online only has wheat, rice, and beans. There was no place to order #10 cans of milk and other items.

  86. Sorry, I thought the post was specific that only the precanned items (wheat, beans, rice) where available online.

  91. Crystal,
Thank you so so so much for posting this video. I hadn’t made it to the cannery yet because I was intimidated by this “canning thing.” I live in WA, and we have a cannery about 1 1/2 hours away, but they aren’t able to let us come and can. However, we can still buy in bulk and use the stake’s canner to can at home. I’ve been procrastinating it because I just didn’t know how to do it and it all seemed so inconveinant.

Thank you for posting this so I know that it’s not hard and something I can do. I’m planning on getting some of my canning done this month!

  94. Non LDS, contact someone who is, or the cannery direct. They will treat you with great respect. They prefer that EVERYONE, including members, donate some time and effort in doing some of the canning before buying supplies. This is what pays for the low prices. Some of the provisions you help to can are given to charities, disaster relief and those in need. Give a couple of hours in a friendly environment with nice people doing work that isn’t work and they will let you buy the place out if you want. No amount of hours work in exchange for amount of food bought. I’ve done this many times, and actually always have a good time.

  95. Apparently, different canneries have different rules. I’m in Denver, and our place is still welcoming non members. For those who are not, make friends with a member and ask to go with them. We don’t want you to go without.

  96. I would like to can other items…maybe brown sugar, powdered sugar, or chocolate chips. Are these items ok to can? also where can I find smaller cans for these items?

  97. I no brown sugar is a no because it's too moist. I would check
http://www.extension.usu.edu for more information. (just do a search on their
    website)

  98. I can't seem to find a phone number for the Saint George Cannery and the list's of items being canned , sizes and prices. Can someone help??????

  100. Kristi- I've been searching on the internet and can't seem to get an exact address or location for the cannery in Boise. Could you please give me that information?

  101. With the advancing technology, there are numerous devices available in the market that can preserve the quality of your foods like vacuum food sealer.
