Food Storage Refried Beans

What are food storage refried beans? Well, it’s simple it’s dehydrated refried beans. They look like little refried bean chunks and when reconstituted they are creamy delicious refried beans. Some people might be afraid to try dehydrated refried beans from food storage, but let me tell you that they are the most creamy, flavorful, delicious refried beans I’ve ever eaten. If you’re still skeptical, it may help to know that anytime you are eating out and thinking outside the bun you are eating reconstituted dehydrated beans. That’s right, even fast food chains use food storage-and so can you! They are very easy to make and take about 10 minutes prep time (most of which is just covering the beans and letting them do their thing). Everybody I’ve served them to has no idea and comments on how creamy they are. We use ours alot as burritos.

ESSENTIAL REFRIED BEAN TIPS:

  • Use LESS water then it calls for on the can.  If you use the full amount of water they will be runny-yuck!  I use about 3/4 of the water called for.  After you’ve let the beans hydrate you can always add a little water if they are too dry but you can’t ever get out extra water if it’s runny!
  • If you want to save time (and dishes) you can heat the water in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave.  Add the beans and cover.  I even use a bowl that has a tight fitting bowl that I can refrigerate the leftovers in.
  • Add a little spice!  Try adding a little cumin for extra flavor.
  • If you’re serving them as a side dish, top with cheese, diced green onions and a dollop of sour cream.

HOW LONG WILL THESE LAST IN MY FOOD STORAGE?

Well that is hard to say…when you find they are delicious, easy, and cheaper you’ll be going through them much faster! But in a logistical sense, they will last 7 years in your food storage.

  11. Crystal, I was told the refried beans from the cannery are the same ones they use at Taco Bell!

I guess that can be good or bad depending on your tastes! 🙂

  13. Thank you for everything Crystal. You are helping me help my “food storage challenged ward” to get a glimmer…Your videos are indispensable. You wouldn’t think someone would need a tutorial for blender pancakes, but we have a lot of ladies with who English is their second language and your videos are GREAT! I have to say that i LOVE the cannery’s refried flaked beans. They are a staple at our house; one of my teenagers just cooks them himself and eats them with tortillia chips and salsa. We use them for nachos, burritoes, for southwestern side dishes. i add the dehydrated onions and “fiesta” pinto bean seasoning (best EVER) and we love them! TexMex lovers with love ’em!

  17. You can buy dehydrated refried beans at your local cannery and then rehydrate them yourself at home by mixing equal amounts beans and boiling water and letting it sit 10 minutes. For thicker beans, use 1 heaping cup beans per 1 cup water as the 1:1 ratio is a little on the runny side for burritos.

  19. Great! Here in Laredo, TX breakfast tacos are a way of life. There are so many kinds. They put diced potatoes, chorizo, bacon; almost any combination with the eggs. Of course to have them on the homemade flour tortillas is extremely hard to pass up. They also do the refried beans for breakfast too, I am having a little harder time adjusting to that. I have only lived here 1 1/2 yrs. so give me time it will probably happen. Thanks for all your ideas, recipes, how to videos. Love them.
