So my dad gave us a great Christmas present a few years ago. It was a large and detailed cookbook/family history detailing how his family and ancestors ate. It was definitely a labor of love and very interesting to see cooking through the ages. Have I mentioned that my family likes to cook?! I grew up with both of my parents cooking in the kitchen. In fact, my grandmother made sure all of her boys could cook, she didn’t want them dependent on a woman! What can I say? Self-reliance, runs heavily in my family. 😉 So my dad definitely made some pretty great food growing up. One of the most interesting things I noticed in this recipe book is how much LESS sugar used to be in dessert recipes. (Not to mention they ate things like Raisin Pie…). My grandmother’s chocolate chip cookie recipe is very similar to the Nestle Tollhouse recipe but it calls for 1/3 less sugar! It is definitely true that we are adding a whole lot more sugar to everything! So, I had to give it a try…well I had my husband give it a try because he makes cookies much better than I do! Now, this is our go-to recipe. I was surprised how much I liked the decreased amount of sugar, it really brings out the chocolate in the chocolate chips. Go ahead and give it a try!

A quarter of a teaspoon of hot water? I’m guessing that’s an “oops”. Was it a quarter of a cup, maybe?
Nope. Not a mistake. Putting in 1/4 C. water would definitely ruin your dough! I’m pretty sure the hot water is to activate the soda. You could probably live with out it if you wanted.
